The 'California Zephyr' is an Amtrak train which runs from Chicago to San Francisco. This selection of photos was taken during my trip on that train in June 2002, between Omaha and San Francisco. This train passes through some spectacular country.

Observation Deck, This is the observation deck of the Amtrak train. It was very well-placed for watching the passing scenery and also became something of a social centre for the passengers to interact with each other.	Lake Donner, This is a highland lake high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.	Phone Queue, A queue of people waiting to use the phone at Sparks, Nevada (just outside Reno). The train was running 4 hours late and people were anxious to tell friends and relatives they would be arriving late whatever their final destination.	Rafters, People rafting down the Colorado River. This must be a very popular sport as I saw many such rafters as the train travelling parallel with the river.
